Item # 1: ( 77-10 - 16 )
The Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program (NHESP), a section of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife (MassWildlife), is seeking Proposals to sample nocturnal Lepidoptera assemblages during the active 2020 season in at least four managed Inland Barrens sites in Central Massachusetts. Inland Barrens is a term used to collectively describe a suite of unusual fire-influenced natural communities, often associated with glacial outwash and ice contact features, that occur inland, beyond the Massachusetts coastal plain. NHESP and MassWildlife have identified the Inland Barrens Community as a priority conservation target, and have been committed to the active restoration and management of a representative set of these communities in the state. Specialized nocturnal Lepidoptera are a critical component of these communities, and in order to better understand the assemblages present at these sites, as well as to better inform management decisions at these sites, NHESP is seeking proposals to conduct Lepidoptera surveys throughout the 2020 field season (May-October). Goals of this project are to: 1) sample at least the four primary sites once per month with light traps; 2) identify all macro-Lepidoptera and provide an annotated species list for each site; and 3) conduct vegetation sampling at each sample site.
