Item Information
Item # 1: ( 77-10 - 00 )
The Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program, NHESP, of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife , MassWildlife, is seeking to update records of the Sandplain Blue-Eyed Grass, Sisyrinchium fuscatum, on Marthas Vineyard in 2019. Sandplain Blue-Eyed Grass is listed as special concern under the Massachusetts Endangered Species Act, MESA. Populations of this species are expected to be shifting and changing due to the early successional habitat requirements of this species, and challenges implementing management practices needed to provide these habitat conditions, such as mowing and prescribed fire. This is especially true on several large properties owned and managed by the Trustees where the species occurs. Applicants should have experience surveying populations of rare plants in Massachusetts, preferably on Marthas Vineyard, and have knowledge of habitat requirements of the Sandplain Blue-Eyed Grass. There are four Sisyrinchium species known to occur on Marthas Vineyard - Sisyrinchium angustifolium, S. atlanticum, S. fuscatum and S. montanum). Applicants must show they are capable of distinguishing between these four similar species.
