Item Information
Item # 1: ( 77-10 - 00 )
The Wood Turtle (Glyptemys insculpta) has declined across its range from eastern Canada to Minnesota and south to Virginia. In Massachusetts, populations in urbanized areas have declined substantially from pre-Industrial baselines. Populations in the Ipswich, Parker, Shawsheen, Nashua, Assabet, Charles, Blackstone, and Taunton Rivers have been reduced to fragmented, isolated, and small populations. In other areas of these basins, suitable habitat exists that was formerly degraded by industrial effluent and development. This multi-year, interdisciplinary project will restore Wood Turtle populations in urbanized areas of Massachusetts by convening a restoration advisory group; documenting viable occurrences; mapping suitable but unoccupied habitat; recording the seasonal movements of 20 adults with radiotelemetry; locating and protecting nests; headstarting young; and tracking the survivorship and movements of 20 released headstarted turtles.
