Item Information
Item # 1: ( 77-10 - 16 )
Over the last several years monitoring surveys of Common Loons during the nesting season have been done collaboratively by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation, BRI, and MassWildlife staff. This effort has enabled us to closely monitor the population status and nesting success as well as identify current threats to the population. Although increasing numbers and expanding range of the Common Loon has made this task more challenging, the overall population remains small and vulnerable, making continued population monitoring and identifying color-banded birds increasingly important. MassWildlife seeks continued state-wide monitoring of the nesting loon population with an emphasis on identifying color-marked birds to investigate survival and movements (e.g., dispersal distance), factors limiting the growth of this population. Additionally, unbanded birds will be targeted for banding to allow for continued investigations into loon survival and movements in Massachusetts.
